In the Colombian Caribbean where Cartagena de Indias is located, we are affected by two basic seasonal climates. From May to the end of November is the rainy season, with a brief dry spell from July to August (el “veranillo”) with winds from the north; and the rest of the year is a mild climate with light winds blowing in from the south and west, bringing sporadic rainfall to our region, tending to decline in movement. The winds from the north begin at the end of November creating sea swells whose force depends on the lunar phase. The temperature during the day in Cartagena hovers around 80ºF to 90ºF. There is high humidity during the rainy season, and in general the heavy rainfalls are short and disappear rapidly. However, in the dry season, which is winter in the northern hemisphere, the temperature during the night is quite comfortable at sea and on land. Due to our geographical location, we are in a safe area from hurricanes. Some tropical storms occur during the rainy season bringing strong gusts of wind for short periods of time.
